Personal, Social, and Emotional Development

Making Relationships

Development Matters: learn by interacting with others (birth–11 months); look to others for responses which confirm, contribute to, or challenge their understanding of themselves.

Early Learning Goal: work as part of a group or class, taking turns and sharing fairly, understanding that there needs to be agreed values and codes of behaviour for groups of people, including adults and children, to work together harmoniously.

What you need

Group size: groups of four to six children.

Role-play area with soft toys or plastic dinosaurs, drapes for background drops, dinosaur masks, props, resources for trees.

What to do

Invite children to recreate the land of dinosaurs in your role-play area. Ask them to think about how a world inhabited by dinosaurs would look. Where did they live? What did they eat? Encourage the children to make 3D scenery with junk modelling materials, for example trees from large cardboard tubes.

Provide plastic dinosaurs and dinosaur masks so that children can act out and retell stories about dinosaurs in their play. Allow time for children to explore the area and play.
