The poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by war poet and soldier John McCrae uses the symbolism of a poppy.

This well-known and moving poem from the First World War was written by a Canadian soldier who witnessed his friend’s death. It uses the poppy as a dramatic symbol and is accompanied by a short extract from Shakespeare’s Hamlet that also features flowers as symbols.
