Making tracks

Encourage creativity and invite babies to explore mark making without a pen or paper. Sometimes people think that mark making begins once a child holds a pen. Actually, the mark making journey begins from birth. Don’t dismiss the lines, circles and chocolate pudding track marks that babies make, value their creative attempts at taking their first steps towards writing.

What you need:
Large scale paper, tape, small wheeled vehicles, a tray, baby food

What to do
Cover area with large scale paper and tape it down. Invite the baby to dip their favourite vehicles in a tray of baby food (for example, chocolate pudding). Invite the baby to roll the vehicle over the paper to make track mark pictures.
