Daft dictionary
Read the children some extracts from Lewis Carroll’s ‘Jabberwocky’, or Edward Lear’s nonsense poems. Let them spot the weird and wonderful words that were invented by these writers. What do they think a ‘Bandersnatch’ looks like? Or a ‘Jub-Jub-Bird’? Or a ‘Pobble’? And who would like to go to sea in a sieve?
Explain that these words are simply meant to be fun. Some of them are made like jigsaws, with bits of other words stuck together. Ask the children what they think ‘Burble’ and ‘Beamish’ mean – and show them Tenniel’s fabulous illustration of the Jabberwock! Now – what if the class could invent a daft dictionary?
