Great Fire of London

This September will be the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London, five days that changed history and altered the face of our capital city forever. These ideas and resources are designed to help Early Years practitioners to share information about this historical event and explore activities across the EYFS including buckets of water races, playing in the role-play bakery and building a junk model London street.

Images of the fire

Share information and fun facts about the Great Fire of London with the children. Show them the poster from the Museum of London website which gives a vivid pictorial depiction of the event. The Museum is holding an interactive exhibition about the Great Fire entitled ‘Fire! Fire!’ from 23rd July 2016 – 17th April 2017. Look at pictures on Google images of famous paintings of the Fire of London. Talk about how quickly the fire spread because the houses were made of wood and built very close together. Explain that the fire started in a Baker’s shop on Pudding Lane. Why do the children think a fire might start in a baker’s shop? You could even use this panoramic view tool.
