Children often love to tell stories of family life. Sharing this information is a great way of showing and celebrating both the similarities and differences in family groups, traditions, and day-to-day routines.

The activities here all include lots of opportunities for children to talk about family members. They involve a lot of creative thinking and should be child-led where possible, with children choosing their own materials to use, which characters to make, and means of construction.

Note that it is important to consider the individual circumstances of the children in your group with this exercise, so that all family groups are celebrated and treated with sensitivity. Some children may choose to focus on a group of friends or a pet instead.

All activities here are suitable for both Early Years settings and home learning.
