Smashing stereotypes in sport

In front of the biggest crowd ever recorded for a Euros match, at the iconic Wembley stadium, the Lionesses ‘brought football home’ after scoring 2-1 against a strong German side. The whole country seemed to be behind these record-breaking ladies, who ended England’s 56-year wait for victory in a major tournament.

After the match, coach Sarina Wiegman said: “Those women are the trailblazers for the next generation, We should always remember the ones who went before us because they made a path for us. This team makes a path for the next generation.”

Interest in women in sport is higher than ever, with more and more inspiring stars on the scene that children can look up to as their new heroes. This October, the Women’s Rugby World Cup is taking place in New Zealand, hopefully providing us with more nail-biting moments and opportunities to get behind our favourite teams.

Gabby Logan signed off the BBC’s Euro 22 Final coverage with, “You think it’s all over? It’s only just begun.” Let’s keep that sentiment going strong by inspiring the next generation of sportswomen, and sportsmen, to strive to achieve what seems like the impossible…
