Pupil leadership in action

The importance of children taking ownership of their learning and having greater roles within school decision-making is increasingly recognised and can be a more powerful tool than school leaders may initially think. Pupil leadership forms a huge part of the teaching of British Values and Citizenship, improves children’s communication skills and aids in gaining the confidence of the children.

What is effective pupil leadership?

  • Recognising that children have thoughts and opinions on issues that matter in the classroom, in the school, and beyond this in their local and global community.
  • Giving children an active role in influencing and taking action on decisions about these issues.
  • Enabling children to participate as role models and the voice of their own future.
