See how they grow

Empty one of your pots or tubs with a small group of children, and half fill it with fresh compost and bulb fibre. Invite the children to carefully cut open a bag of bulbs, such as daffodils or crocus, and arrange them on a tray. Encourage each child to take one bulb and look at it closely. Ask them, ‘What does the bulb remind you of?’, ‘Have you ever looked at a bulb before?’, ‘Which is the top and which is the bottom?’, ‘How can you tell?’, ‘What will it look like when it grows?’. Show the children an image of a fully grown daffodil or crocus. Help the children to plant the bulbs, ensuring that each bulb is the correct way up, water them and wait until spring! Write a label for the tub entitled ‘Children’s bulbs – do not touch!’ and laminate it.
