Purposeful, engaging, challenging, and creative – these are words, that as teachers, we are all too familiar with. But how easy is it to achieve all of these things across the primary curriculum? The following is an account of how I devised a unit of work centred around a popular children’s picture book The Tunnel by Anthony Browne (Walker, £5.99 PB). The unit encapsulated D&T, art, numeracy, literacy, drama and PSHE – and engaged, excited and challenged a Year 5 class.

Activities

  1. The power of the picture
  2. Dilemmas and decisions
  3. Outstanding and imaginative ideas
  4. A multisensory journey
