Life through a lens: African savannah

Savannah regions lie mainly between 5° and 15° either side of the equator. Use a large wall or floor map to show the children how the savannah regions of Africa are largely between areas of tropical rainforest and desert zones. Highlight the Plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania and Kenya – the best-known savannah region because of the richness of its wildlife.

Talk about the climatic conditions found in this region of Africa. Temperatures are high throughout the year, but there are distinct dry and wet seasons. In central Africa, most rain falls during the months of July, August and September; December, January and February are the driest months. Discuss the wide range of animal life that inhabits this African grassland and why it is such a good place for these animals to make their homes. (Refer to the online fact cards below.)
