The sounds of language are essential to both reading and writing, and the pre-school age group can start to explore sounds as a preparation for later phonics work. I Spy is fun, easy to play and can be adapted to each child’s individual needs.

What to do

Start introducing the initial sounds of words as a spontaneous activity; for example, when looking at lawn flowers, mention that ‘buttercup’ begins with the b sound, ‘daisy’ begins with the d sound and so on.
