Bullying can have a devastating effect on children’s self esteem and educational prospects. Despite a continuing focus by schools on dealing with bullies, it is a perennial problem. There is no single solution that will stamp out bullying overnight; staff, children and parents need to work together in an ongoing fight against bullying behaviour.

Bullying behaviours

Bullying behaviours range from teasing and name calling to verbal threats and physical violence. Bullies will often operate in a group, typically with a leader who has high status within the peer group. Sometimes bullies will choose a victim who appears ‘different’, other times there is no obvious reason for selecting a particular victim.
