Golden Rules 1: We are gentle

These books are based on activities taken from The Handbook of Golden Rules and The Golden Rules Story Set
In the opening article of our six-part series, Jenny Mosley shows you how to teach the first golden rule
This is the first in a series of six articles designed to show how learning the golden rules can be a joyful experience for very young children.
We all want our settings to be warm and nurturing places where everyone feels secure. Indeed, we know that none of us can thrive or develop if we fear that others around us are reckless, rough or intimidating. This is why it is so important that we mentor a spirit of gentleness in everything we do.
The spirit of gentleness starts with you. You communicate with your hands, your words, your eyes. You enrich it by moving softly and lightly; by speaking warmly and using nurturing words; by smiling and being comforting. When you embody the spirit of gentleness, your children will copy you and be gentle too. You can also draw their attention to the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of gentleness by engaging them in activities that teach the spirit of gentleness in enjoyable and memorable ways. Here are some for you to try.
