Rat-a-tat-tat – bring back a traditional school fête game to help you teach forces and movement

One of the great things about school fêtes is the opportunity to take part in the wonderful and nostalgic variety of home-made games. One such game is the exciting and often frustrating ‘Splat the Rat’. This mischievous little creature keeps us guessing as to when it’s going to pop out of the pipe! Although the game looks easy, it very rarely is – but it still creates anticipated delight when you eventually splat the rat. With a little bit of construction and creativity (and the caretaker’s stepladder!), the game can provide a practical way of exploring curriculum themes such as forces and movement and speeding up and slowing down.
