By Karen Hart

Located in the heart of Soho, in one of the world’s most vibrant cities, Soho Nursery and Pre-school still manages to feel really cosy. Tucked away behind London’s Brewer Street, the nursery, with its secret underground garden, is a real gem. From the diversity of families using the nursery to the innovative experiences provided for their children, this is a unique pre-school with never a dull moment.

Soho pre-school (part of the LEYF Nurseries group) prides itself on inspiring creativity among the children who attend and provides numerous opportunities to explore this creativity through art, drama, dance and music, which manager, Greg Lane, believes is vital to the whole development and happiness of children.

Earlier this year, the pre-school organised a charity event, titled, The Children of Soho – an exploration of life in Soho under lockdown. This virtual event, which took place on Zoom, showcased some specially made paintings, sculptures and photographic pieces all created by their two to four year olds. The art included papier-mâché sculptures of a large blue bird, titled, Wings of Soho and a lock and key, representing the strange times we find ourselves in. There were drawings and paintings too, including a multi-coloured Andy Warhol inspired print.

Greg says:
‘This was actually Soho pre-school’s second auction, and they both proved a huge success, making several hundred pounds, which we’ve used to fund such things as a woodwork bench, baby equipment and visiting theatre makers to work with our children – continuing our ideal of a consistent immersive creative space.
