It’s important that all children can see themselves represented in the books they read and the authors they admire. There have been some brilliant, diverse books published recently, so we’ve curated a list of some of our favourite contemporary releases from writers of colour, and provided additional resources to accompany each book.

My Monster and Me

For ages 3-5

My Monster and Me

A touching story about a little boy whose worry monster follows him everywhere he goes. It’s there when he gets dressed, when he wants to play with his toys, and even when his friends come over to visit. How can he escape his worries?

Activity ideas

Ask children to draw a monster that represents their worries. Discuss when their worry monsters might appear – would they always be around, or just appear at certain times? Now ask the children to revisit their worry monster pictures and try to make them as cute or silly as possible using different materials.
