The activities in this article are all designed to involve children in the storytelling process, encouraging their contributions – however small or strange!

Imaginative play and the narratives children create as part of their games are the beginnings of creative storytelling. By picking up on popular themes observed during play, you can tap into a child’s interests and help them to create stories that incorporate themes they are interested in.

Story boxes

This activity is suitable from Early Years through Key Stage 1.

You will need:
  • Story book
  • Medium sized cardboard box (this can be decorated by the children)
  • Objects relating to the story that fit in your box
