c&d vikings 1

The Vikings are always a great history subject on which to base a display. They originated from the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Denmark and Sweden around CE 700 to 1100. They were notoriously fierce and threatening. The Vikings traded and raided across a huge area. Historians believe that the Viking raids were so successful and effective because they would strike without warning. Dik Browne created the character Hägar the Horrible as a cartoon strip. An interesting activity when looking at the Vikings is to ask the children to create their own comic Viking strip. These drawings could make an amusing and busy display.

The rough sea and the long boat

This will work well on a large display board. Viking long boats were around 21 metres long and 5 metres wide, with huge square sails and carved decorations.
