Create and Display: Journeys

This is a great theme when children begin a new academic year and have had a variety of experiences from the summer holidays. Invite the children to share their journey experiences, describing how they travelled and the countries they visited. A well-known book entitled The Jolly Postman by Janet and Allan Ahlberg (Puffin, 2002) is about a postman delivering his letters to a variety of interesting characters and provides an excellent starting point for this theme.

Read the story to the children, stopping after each delivery to read the post that the postman delivered. Talk about the characters and decide which part of the story the children would like to make for a display. Discuss the order that the postman delivered the letters.
