Try out these fantastic ideas to get the most out of using story bags in your setting.
What is a story bag?
A story bag helps children to explore a story through play. It consists of a large cloth bag containing a copy of the book, puppets, props, games, scenery backdrops and recordings of the story. You may want to make items to put into the bag such as a board game that links directly with the story. Model your games on old favourites, such as ‘Lotto’, and laminate to make them durable.
A story bag as an evolving resource
Introduce different items and activities, one at a time, to the children before adding them to the bag. Encourage the children to discuss the resources that they would like to include and involve them in sourcing new items and activities. Keep the story bag in your book corner so that the children can play with it freely.
