Burnout is now more commonly recognised within the education sector, with a wide range of contributing factors. Although low-level stress can affect many of us at times, burnout is the term for long-term stress with specific signs and symptoms. In this case, burnout is associated with over-work and anxiety due to the pressures of the profession.

Symptoms…

Symptoms of burnout will differ from person to person. However, there are some commonalities, including insomnia. Lack of sleep has implications on physical and emotional health, with the NHS recognising that it can cause concentration difficulties, irritability and low mood. Long-term effects of sleep deprivation can impact everyday life, from relationship difficulties to hormone imbalances and cardiovascular problems. However, it is not just sleeping patterns affected when teachers suffer from burnout. Stress can lead to brain fog, muscle aches, forgetting to eat and feelings of overwhelm. These heightened feelings of anxiety during burnout mean it becomes difficult to recover from the usual stresses we experience.
