Royalty is an enduringly popular theme in children’s stories. With so many books to choose from though, which should you read with your children? Here are our recommendations.

Princess Smartypants

For ages 3-5

Princess Smartypants does not want to get married. She enjoys being a Ms. But because she is very pretty and rich, all the princes want to marry her. This riotously funny fairy-tale-with-a-difference describes how Smartypants fights to preserve her independence.

Activity idea

Challenge children to think of a series of three tests that the Princess could set for her suitors. Ask the children to draw pictures of the tasks in the order that the suitors need to carry them out. Older children can label their drawings with simple words to make their instructions clearer.
