1 Find the way

Use remote-controlled vehicles to follow a route and negotiate obstacles

Development matters: seek to acquire basic skills in turning on and operating ICT equipment (22-36 months); know how to operate simple equipment (30-50 months).

Early learning goal: find out about and identify the uses of everyday technology, and use information and communication technology and programmable toys to support their learning.

What you need

Group size: pairs of children.

Remote-controlled vehicle for each pair of children; different types of obstacles; open space.

What to do

Show the children the remote-controlled vehicles and invite them to play with them in pairs, making sure that they take turns. Make sure that they can operate the controls to make the vehicle go forwards, backwards and to the left and right.

Place an obstacle in an open space and suggest that the children try to guide their vehicle around the obstacle. Encourage them to talk about what they are doing, developing their use of positional language as they play.


Let the children just concentrate on moving the vehicle forwards and backwards. Help them to stop the toy in a controlled manner.
