1 Crossing the road

Design a new road safety sign for crossing patrol role play

Development matters: distinguish one sound from another (22-36 months); recognise rhythm in spoken words (30-50 months).

Early learning goal: hear and say sounds in words in the order in which they occur.

What you need

Group size: small groups.

‘A new road sign’ activity sheet; felt-tipped pens; crayons; strong tape; strips of stiff card or dowelling; whiteboard.

What to do

Talk to the children about their experiences of crossing the road. Who helps them to cross the road to get to the setting?

Give each child an enlarged, card copy of the activity sheet. Invite them to use it to design a new road safety sign.

Encourage the children to explain their design and choice of colours. Ask them to include a bold word, for example, ‘Stop’ or ‘Look’. Say each word slowly to the children, and encourage them to repeat the words, emphasising the individual sounds. Write the words on the whiteboard.
