Developing Imagination and Imaginative Play

Development matters: begin to make-believe by pretending (22-36 months); develop a repertoire of actions by putting a sequence of movements together (30-50 months).

Early learning goal: use their imagination in art and design, music, dance, imaginative and role-play and stories.

What you need

Group size: whole group.

Large, open space; happy, lively music; music player.

What to do

Ask the children if they have ever been to the seaside. Be sensititive to individual circumstances. Talk about how the waves roll on to the beach at the seaside. Invite the children to make up their own seaside dance.

Ask the children to spread out in a long line and together pretend to be waves, creeping forward slowly, then ‘breaking’ and whooshing back to the shore.

Next, let the children move freely around the space, pretending to be waves curling and leaping, rushing forward and then creeping back slowly.

Continue the seaside dance by encouraging the children to imagine that they are sea creatures or mermaids. Share their ideas, before deciding on their own.
