‘Mardi Gras’ translates literally from French as ‘Fat Tuesday’. It is a day when foods that contain fat, particularly meat, eggs and dairy products, are eaten up in preparation for the period of fasting known as Lent. Mardi Gras has today become synonymous with the exciting carnivals and parades held throughout the world. This celebration is a time of excitement and merrymaking prior to what is, for some, a quiet time of reflection and penitence.
