1 Wildlife spotting

Create a group nature diary to keep a record of local wildlife

Communication, Language and Literacy


Development matters: ascribe meanings to marks that they see in different places (30-60 months); use writing as a means of recording and communicating (40-60+ months).

Early learning goal: attempt writing for different purposes, using features of different forms such as lists, stories and instructions.

What you need

Group size: whole group.

Outdoor area where you are likely to spot wildlife and plants; clipboards; paper; camera; sketchbooks; pencils; bird tables or bird feeders (optional).

What to do

Take the children to the outdoor area. Explain that this is a special wildlife spotting area and that you would like them to take pictures, draw sketches and make notes about the things that they see there.

Spend time visiting this area on a regular basis. Look for insects, birds and animal and plant life. Help the children to take pictures to record the changes that they see. Introduce bird feeders or bird tables if possible, and encourage the children to take notes and draw pictures of things that they notice.

Back at your group, share your observations and collect all the sketches, photographs and notes and put them together to create a group nature diary.
