In this online session, originally broadcast on 27 June 2022, Chris Ratcliffe, Head of Education at Scholastic UK, presents the findings of a major piece of research about the teaching of reading in Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs) and schools.

Drawing on nearly 1,400 responses, the research presented here explores the 12 key issues and trends emerging through the Scholastic Reading Audit, and the common literacy strategies, policies and implementation plans that underpin these.

Guidance is offered on how to develop effective teaching strategies and key learnings that align with the latest DfE guidance on the teaching of reading, including ‘The Reading Framework’, as well as share insights into Scholastic’s Daily Reading Lesson, a new high-impact, low-workload blueprint to teaching reading to children from ages six to 11.

Jez Smith, English Lead Professional at Discovery Trust – a primary and SEND MAT based in Leicestershire – and Maddie Towne, Year 6 Teacher and English Lead at a Discovery Trust school, then discuss their experiences of raising standards of literacy in primary education, and how they have used the Scholastic Reading Audit to drive change and deliver impact.
