When Emmeline Goulden was born in 1858, most women had very few rights and they could not vote to elect members of parliament.

Emmeline’s parents believed in greater equality for all people, and encouraged their daughter to think the same way. When she was still a teenager, Emmeline’s mother took her to meetings campaigning for women’s suffrage – votes for women.
