Whether you’re a parent whose child is about to start at school or a childcare professional supporting a family to take this next big step, we’ve got information, support and reassurance to share.
Starting school is an exciting time for young children and parents, but it can also be daunting. A recent survey from the Professional Association of Childcare and Early Years (PACEY) showed 71% of parents were anxious about their child starting school. Childcare professionals have a vital part to play in helping to manage the transition to full-time education. After all, being school ready isn’t about a child reading, writing or doing maths, but more about the child’s social and emotional well-being.
It’s important to help children in your care to prepare for this transition, whilst still having fun and empowering them to start to feel confident about the exciting times ahead. PACEY has developed a range of materials to help, including a preparing for school guide which provides some great advice and top tips; steps to starting school posters showing the varying stages of school-readiness; along with some downloadable factsheets for parents about mark-making, communication, listening and numeracy.
