Best known around the world for two of its harbour-side attractions – the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, Sydney or the Harbour City, is Australia’s largest and liveliest city.

The renowned English explorer, Captain James Cook, first landed in this part of Australia in 1770. But it was 18 years later that the first colony began to develop, when Arthur Phillip sailed into Botany Bay in charge of the first fleet of British ships packed with more than 700 convicts. Transportation here was to continue for more than 50 years.

Nowadays, Sydney is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city. It particularly came of age when it was chosen, against strong opposition from elsewhere in the world, to host the 2000 Olympic Games – regarded by many as the most successful ever held.
