Investigate the water cycle through poetry
Water, with its incredible unending journey, makes an ideal stimulus for language work. The poem ‘River journey’, reflects part of this cycle, and the accompanying activities explore a variety of poetry patterns that focus on the idea that water is forever on the move.
Read the poem ‘River journey’ aloud. Show the children an enlarged version, exploring first the pattern it makes on the page (four verses, each of five lines, the last of which is only three words long). Consider the story that the poem is telling – how it follows the river’s growth from a spring in the hills to the open sea.
