Traditional tales such as Snow White can provide a great starting point for a range of cross-curricular activities about story structure, themes and characters.

Curriculum links: Literacy (story retelling and sequencing AF4); Geography (simple mapping skills and conventions); Art (selecting and using a range of materials)

Children can work in pairs or groups to devise their own ‘maps’ of the story. This will help them to sequence the key events and begin to explore setting. Start by talking about where the various events of the story take place (palace, forest, the dwarfs’ cottage and so on).

Children can then depict these places using various materials or by drawing them, taking one location each if working in a group. Assemble them on a large sheet of sugar paper, discussing where they think each should be positioned. Get them to draw in the paths, roads and any other important features which will link the events together. They can also add words and phrases to show what is happening – for example, ‘Palace where wicked queen looks in the mirror’, ‘path where old woman walked to cottage’.
