The Gruffalo’s Child

Look at the front cover of The Gruffalo’s Child by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, which shows the Gruffalo’s child sitting on her father’s knee. The Gruffalo looks like he is sharing words of wisdom with the child. What do your class think the Gruffalo might be saying? What advice do their dads share with them? Why do parents want to keep their children safe from danger? After you have read the story, look at the last few illustrations where the Gruffalo’s child is sneaking back into bed with her dad. Ask your class to describe how the child is feeling now. What is it about being back with her dad that makes her feel safe? Use the children’s ideas to write speech bubbles for the Gruffalo’s child and her dad.
