The Nutcracker is a ballet choreographed by Marius Petipa (1818-1910) with a score composed by Piotr Tchaikovsky (1840-1893). Originally a book by German author E.T.A. Hoffman (1776-1822) titled The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the story was simplified to make it a suitable length for a two act ballet (1892). Apparently, Tchaikovsky did not enjoy composing the Nutcracker due to the musical constraints placed upon him by Petipa, but the ballet enjoyed great success. It was from the mid twentieth century that The Nutcracker grew in popularity to become the much loved Christmas experience we know today with countless performances enjoyed by audiences around the world.
