Have you ever tried to read between the lines? When I tried, all I could see was white space with lumpy bits! Of course, we’re not supposed to take the expression literally but how do we move beyond the literal? It’s not always easy, but, when thinking about inference and deduction, isn’t that exactly what we’re asking our children to do? We’re encouraging them to find information from text that isn’t there at first glance.

As the curriculum says, we’re inviting them to: ‘look for meaning beyond the literal’.
