In this article:

With approximately one in every twelve adults and one in every eight children in the UK affected by asthma to some degree, it is a condition every carer of young children needs to give considerable thought to. When a child has a chronic health condition, such as asthma, it can be rather daunting knowing that you are likely to have to try to prevent attacks and know how to cope with them if they occur.

It is essential to have thorough action treatment plans in place prior to children starting in your setting so that you can address the fears faced by the child, parents and carers. There are currently over one million children in the UK being treated for asthma, yet despite the numbers of children affected, according to leading asthma organisation – Asthma UK, only 11 per cent of pre-school workers surveyed said their organisation had an asthma policy, so perhaps now is the time for you to ensure that you have a policy in place. Use our online factsheet for the essential information to help you develop a policy suitable for your setting.
