Harvest festival

Autumn is a great time to incorporate a topic on food into your literacy lessons. Many children will have experienced ‘growing their own’ during the summer months and, of course, schools throughout the country will be celebrating harvest during the Autumn term. Children can contribute to a harvest festival service by composing poems, prayers, songs and play scripts. Many fruits and vegetables are growing in abundance now, particularly the likes of apples, tomatoes, pumpkins and squashes and all of these can provide an excellent starting point for a literacy lesson on descriptive writing.
