Current policy around literacy includes a drive to encourage children to enjoy reading as a way of raising standards. However, what is it that we are asking children to enjoy? What do we mean by ‘reading’?

These were some of the questions that were addressed in a survey we carried out at the National Literacy Trust last summer. We asked over 1600 primary and secondary school children whether they are readers. Nearly a third of children said that they are not a ‘reader’. However, when we asked them what types of materials they read outside of school, these non-readers professed to reading a wide variety of materials, including magazines, blogs, websites and emails.
