Who are your class’s icons? Who are yours? Explore popular culture to see how fashions, trends and tastes change through the years
Introduce the phrase ‘popular culture’ and discuss what it means. Show the class images of popular culture from the past 50 years and talk about different aspects, such as literature, cinema, television, music, sport, eating out, shops, clothes, theatre and holidays.
For the first lesson plan suggested overleaf you will need the A3 poster backs ‘My diary’. For both lessons the children will need to carry out their own research to collect information about popular culture, from books and/or from talking to people of appropriate age. For popular culture it is particularly helpful to have a male and female viewpoint. An extremely useful book is Yesterday’s Britain (Reader’s Digest ISBN: 0 276 42391 7). For the second lesson plan you will need Activity sheet 5, ‘My research’. It would also be very helpful if children were able to listen to old pop songs (tapes or CDs are fine, but original singles and a record player are even better!) and watch part of some old films or television programmes (plenty are available on video).
