Feast your eyes on these tempting dip-in science activities

Food makes an ideal medium through which to explore the links between science and technology with young children. From topics on senses through to changing materials, food provides a range of opportunities for practical investigation and discussion-based activities. With enough attention to hygiene, the end products of some of your explorations can even be eaten.
Remember to consider allergies and cultural differences among your children before you introduce any foods into a classroom environment. In addition to peanuts, wheat and tomatoes can also provoke allergic reactions, while vegetarians and Muslim children will not be able to work with animal gelatine. Carry out a risk assessment before undertaking any activities involving heat.
The pre-planning and organisation required are well worth the effort when the outcome is to fill your classroom with the scrummy smell of freshly baked bread or chocolate-covered fruit.
