This month, it’s all about football clubs – the ground, the badge, the strip, the performance

Boy playing football

Make the most of the excitement of the new football season with this range of cross-curricular ideas from Hot Topics author, Peter Riley. This month, the activities look at tracing the history of football clubs – examining their grounds, designing a badge and strip, and gathering evidence on the club’s performance this season. Curriculum links can be made with history, art and design, ICT, D&T and geography. Plus, you could make this a local history study, too.

There may be supporters of several different clubs in your class ranging from the Premier League down to your local league. Ask the children to bring in any programmes they have for the teams they support and then arrange the class into supporters groups. (Throughout this article, substitute ‘your local club’ for the team/s you’re studying, if appropriate.)
