Raksha Bandhan

Introduce the children to the Hindu festival of Raksha Bandhan (5 August 2009), which signifies the importance of love between brothers and sisters
Thread of love
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
During the festival of Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie a special, handmade thread called a ‘Rakhi’, which means the ‘Thread of love’ on the wrists of their brothers. The brother, in turn, makes a promise to protect his sister from all dangers. Help the children to make a Rakhi for a sibling, friend or relative by tying a selection of colourful threads together so it fits comfortably around a wrist like a bracelet. Suggest that they create a sparkling version of the ‘Rakhi’ by entwining colourful beads, sequins and other decorative gems into the threads.
