Make a teddy bear from clay

What you need

Group size: small groups.

Photographs or pictures of teddy bears; modelling clay; clay tools, paint; ribbon.

What to do

Look at the picture of the teddy bears together. Invite each child to select a teddy bear that they would like to represent in clay.

Introduce the various tools and demonstrate their use. Give the children some clay and encourage them to spend time exploring the tools and techniques. Show how to manipulate the clay to create a teddy bear body and head shape, and then help the children to do the same.

As the children create their teddies, encourage them to talk about what they can see in the picture of their chosen teddy, and how they are creating the shapes and patterns using their hands and the tools. Once their teddy shape is created, ask the children to place the arms and legs in the appropriate position.
