Young children are fascinated by all types of transport, so wrap up well against the cold March winds, and take this theme outdoors

A train ride

A train ride

Take an imaginary trip to the seaside on a train. Act out the trip with the children, incorporating their ideas into the adventure as you venture out into your outdoor area. Talk them through catching a bus to the station and buying a ticket. What else will you need on the train? You might be thirsty or hungry, or want something to read. Find your platform, hand in your ticket and look for your reserved seat number on the train. Settle into your seat and talk about what you will do when you arrive at your destination. If at all possible, and with lots of support, take the children on a real short, local train ride and back.
