Investigate the characteristics and uses of materials in the world around us
Children are aware that the world around them contains a huge range of diverse materials. But, do they really appreciate the reasons why we choose specific materials for different purposes? The ideas and activities on these two pages aim to extend children’s understanding of the array of materials we use and of the various properties that characterise them. This knowledge should help children to recognise what needs to be considered when a material is chosen for a particular use.
The activities will provide children with the opportunity to reflect on the properties of familiar materials and to extend their grasp of the vocabulary associated with those properties.
