December festivals: Mexico’s ‘Night of the Radishes’ festival

Celebrated annually during December, and held in Mexico’s Oaxaca City, the festival has become the focal point for the city’s Christmas celebrations. The festival combines folk art and agriculture with displays of ornate radish sculptures, ranging from small animals and human figures to representations of grand events, including the Gueleguetza Dance (traditional Mexican dancing competition), and lots of religious figures, including Nativity scenes. Imaginations really do run wild to create delicate little sculptures ranging from the humorous to the really beautiful.
